“Pruning” covers a range of techniques, each with a different purpose. Knowing roughly what they mean makes it much easier to talk about what your tree needs. Here are the most common ones in plain English.
Crown reduction
This reduces the overall height and spread of a tree while keeping its natural shape. It is useful where a tree has simply grown too big for its space, or to reduce weight on heavy limbs, without the drastic step of removing the whole tree.
Crown thinning
Thinning removes a proportion of the smaller, inner branches to let more light and air through the canopy. It keeps the tree's outline the same but makes it less dense, which can reduce wind resistance and brighten the garden beneath.
Crown lifting
Lifting removes the lower branches to raise the height of the canopy, creating clearance over a path, lawn, driveway or road. It is a good way to let light in and make space underneath without changing the top of the tree.
Deadwooding
Over time trees shed smaller branches and build up deadwood. Removing dead, dying or diseased wood keeps the tree healthier and removes the risk of branches falling, which matters most where people walk or park below.
Pollarding
Pollarding is a method of regularly cutting a tree back to the same points to control its size, usually begun when a tree is young and then repeated. It is often seen on street trees. Once a tree has been pollarded it needs to be maintained on the same cycle.
Drop-crotching
Drop-crotching is a careful reduction technique where branches are cut back to a suitable side branch rather than left as stubs. Cutting to a growing point helps the tree seal the wound and regrow naturally, which is far better for its long-term health than simply topping it.
Which does your tree need?
The right technique depends on the species, the tree's condition and what you want to achieve. We will always explain what we recommend and why. The cost of the work varies with the technique too, which our tree pruning costs guide explains, and the same careful approach applies to our hedge trimming.
